Honesty, Openness and Relationships

May 19th, 2009 by autoPiloting

I am currently dating a guy who has a very different philosophy from me about honest and open communication. He believes that as long as you’re honest in what you actually say then it’s okay if you’re not totally open with people. I believe that if you really want to be close to someone then you need to be not just honest but also open about things.

I guess I just feel like our closest friendships and relationships are supposed to be the place where we feel safe just being who we really are. I can tell my best friend everything and not be embarrassed about it. We’ve talked about medical issues (like hemroids treatment and warts treatment), childhood problems in our families and fears we have about our futures. We know each other because we’re really open about who we are and we know that it’s okay to be that way with each other.

I’m afraid that my relationship with this guy isn’t going to go anywhere because of this difference between us. I don’t want to spend my time trying to convince someone to beĀ open with me. But I do like him and another philosophy of mine is that it’s important to let people be who they are if you want to really get to know them so we’ll just have to see what happens.
