Tattoos are representations of what is important in our lives.  I have a friend who only gets religious tattoos.  His intent is to show people that he is a faith driven person.  Matt has cross designs as well as Jesus tattoos on his arms and back.    Though he opted to go with the religious tattoos, he is also Irish and he has made sure that the tattoos that he does have also represent his culture.  I would say that his tattoos, especially the cross, show his affinity for all things Irish as well as showing off his faith.

That is why tattoos are so cool.  They represent what is important to people.  Everyone has strong opinions about what is important to them or what makes them tick.  Having a tattoo to depict this is a very permanent and real way to represent your life to the world.   People can give you an idea from a conversation what is important to them, but art that elicits a response, especially in tattoo form can show you a picture of what makes them tick.  Knowing a person to this degree often makes you more aware of their world and how they fit into it.  Knowing that can make you a better friend.
