Learning Things As We Grow Up
August 13th, 2008 by autoPiloting
We spend the first two decades of our life in school to learn the things that we need to know to be able to function well in the society of which we are a part. This formal education gives us social skills as well as basic knowledge that allows us to do the jobs that we might seek to do when we become adults. After these two decades (or for some of us, three decades!) are complete, we switch from formal schooling to a more informal education.
This informal education takes place primarily through the work that we do but it may also occur as the result of life changes that happen as we age. For example, someone who is at the stage of purchasing real property may learn about cost seg engineering and how cost segmentation services can be applied to the reduction of property taxes. That’s not something that would be learned in school but it’s still valuable to know as part of an adult’s life.
Most people consider their formal education to be the most important education that they will ever get. That’s because there is so much emphasis placed on getting that education and doing well in school during the time that this education is being pursued. However, the things that you are going to end up finding important in your adult life are just as likely to be things that you learned through informal education as they are to be things that you learned in school.
