Get Your CPAP Supplies Checked Out

November 24th, 2009 by autoPiloting

One of the most important pieces of equipment that you will ever use if you suffer from sleep apnea is your CPAP mask or CPAP machine. That’s why it is crucial that you make sure that your mask or machine is working properly when you get it. You should have it tested out by your doctor, a respiratory therapist or the expert working at the store where you buy your CPAP supplies.

This expert may check for the following things:

  • Proper pressure. Your CPAP equipment needs to be working at the proper pressure in order for it to be effective and safe.
  • Filter. It is very important that the filter on your CPAP supplies is working exactly the way that it is supposed to. This helps to make the equipment work at its optimum capacity.
  • You understand how to use it properly. It’s fairly easy to use this equipment but the professional that you’re working with may want to double check to see that you fully understand how to use it all properly.

Getting these things checked out is just a smart idea. It helps to guarantee that the CPAP supplies that you are using are working the best that they can to keep you healthy.

The Best Thing for Everyone

October 30th, 2009 by searcher

The other day I was catching up with a fellow doll collector and friend of mine who has been taking care of her elderly father for quite a while now.  The situation has gotten quite bad, and as a result she is not getting much sleep and is stressed out all the time.

Her dad is getting quite old and is not really able to take very good care of himself, but he is apparently refusing to move to a retirement home.  All he does all day is sit in his lift chair at home — she said she even found the other day that he had dragged the trash can over next to his chair, so that he could throw stuff away without getting up.

In addition to going over there to take care of him, though, my friend is having to field phone calls from her father during the wee hours of the morning.  It is happening on a regular basis and is one of the primary reasons why she is not sleeping well anymore.

She wants to move her father to a retirement home.  She says they’ll have everything he needs there, including socialization, which she thinks he really needs.  Plus his house just isn’t set up for an aging person, and the staircases are too narrow to make installing stair lifts a possibility.

I’m worried about my friend’s well being.  She can’t keep going on as she has, working to support herself as well as taking care of her father.  She needs sleep, and she needs to be able to relax and not worry about things all the time!  I don’t know how you can prove that your parent is not of sound mind, and put them in a retirement home against their will, but I think that’s what she will need to do before she can get any peace!

Chemo Hair

June 16th, 2009 by searcher

My mom and I recently visited an old acquaintance who had been out of commission for several years with leukemia.  Even after her last bout of chemotherapy, it was a long time before  she was strong enough to go back to work.  Fighting the disease off nearly killed her.

Because she was out of commission for so long, it’s been years since we’ve seen her — since before she was diagnosed, actually.  All of her hair has grown back, and she looks just the same as she did before her diagnosis, albeit a little older and more careworn.

Interestingly, one of the things she told us about was “chemo hair” — how her hair grew in thicker and even curlier after she was done with the chemotherapy.  It’s kind of funny how the cells and the hair follicles respond to chemo — it’s almost like by producing “chemo hair,” they are coming back with a vengeance.

It’s almost surprising, in a way.  You would expect the chemo to have a more lasting effect on the hair follicles, perhaps even killing them permanently and resulting in the person having to get a hair transplant.  But that’s just not the case at all.

It’s amazing how well the human body can rebound from something like that, don’t you think?

Healthy People Should Use HSAs

April 22nd, 2009 by autoPiloting

One of the things that drives many people crazy is that they have to have health insurance. They know that it’s important in case they ever get sick because medical bills are so costly but the health insurance seems like a waste of money for someone who almost never gets sick. One great option to consider is to use a health savings account instead of a health insurance plan.

The health savings account is a way that you can set aside money for health insurance coverage when you need it. It’s a structured method of savings that allows you to make sure that you’re covered when you do need medical insurance but that you’re not paying through the nose for it if you don’t get sick often. You get tax breaks for having this account so you see a lot of different kinds of savings from it.

Florida health insurance is a great example of health insurance that has a good HSA option. Health insurance in FL can be pricey but the HSA plan is almost always affordable for people who aren’t going to be going to the doctor often. You can get this type of health insurance in Miami as well as throughout the rest of the state. It’s something healthy people should consider as a smart way to save money without compromising health coverage.
