What Will Happen to the House?

May 18th, 2009 by searcher

divorce mediation

My parents sometimes talk about getting a divorce.  In fact, as kids my sister and I knew that they were only staying together for us kids, and that once we were out of the house they would probably get a divorce.

My sister and I have both been out of the house for years now, though, and so far it hasn’t happened.  There’s always another excuse as to why they’re staying together for a little longer.  My dad (who was laid off after 9/11 and never found another job) needed my mom’s health insurance; my mom was waiting until she moved back to Pennsylvania, where her family comes from; etc.

I actually think that the two of them are too used to being together to ever get a divorce.  My mom likes having someone to support her so that she can save the money she makes at her job for her retirement, and my dad likes having someone to cook for — even a vegetarian is better than no one at all!

The question of what to do about the house is also making them hesitate, I think.  My mom feels — and I agree — that even though my dad’s income paid the mortgage for all those years, the fact that she was home raising us kids ought to count for something.  She wants the proceeds from the house to be split evenly between them, but he disagrees.

When the time comes, they will probably to look into divorce mediation.  There is something called collaborative divorce in Phoenix, where the two of you basically work everything out between the two of you (and your mediators, of course), thereby avoiding a lengthy, and invariably expensive, court battle.

3 Reasons to Hire Your Own Criminal Lawyer

April 28th, 2009 by searcher

If you are accused of a crime, you will want to hire your own lawyer if you at all possibly can.  I know it’s a big expense, but it may well be worth it — sometimes it can mean the difference between a light sentence and a harsh one, or even being acquitted versus being found guilty!

Here are three good reasons to hire your own lawyer if you are ever accused of a crime.

  • Hiring your own lawyer gives you a choice.  If you can’t afford your own lawyer, you will be appointed a public defender.  This is a lawyer who works for the city, rather than for you, and defends a large number of people who can’t afford their own lawyer.  You won’t get a choice in who the court appoints to represent you, and even if you have a good reason for wanting someone else, you may have a difficult time getting the court to see your side of it.
  • Public defenders are overworked.  The biggest problem with being represented by a public defender is that they are usually WAY overworked.  They have a gazillion cases assigned to them by the courts, and the result is that they usually have too many cases to pay any one the attention they should.  On the other hand, if you hire your own St. Petersburg criminal lawyer, you can rest assured knowing that you are paying your lawyer well to focus more of their time and attention on your case.
  • Public defenders have the court’s interests in mind.  A public defender’s goal is to get you to plea bargain as quickly as possible, so that they can get your case off their desk and focus on getting the next person to plea bargain as well.  They don’t really have your interests in mind — in fact, by overworking them, the courts ensure that they will essentially make decisions that benefit the courts, not you.  Therefore if you need a Clearwater DUI attorney, you will get the best representation for YOU if you hire your own.

Our system is meant to make sure that people with no money still get decent representation.  Certainly we make sure people get representation, but decent?  I’m not sure that is always the case.  That’s why it’s so important to hire your own lawyer!

Great Bridesmaids’ Gift.

March 31st, 2009 by SMO

I got married at the beginning of March.  I know that it an unusual date to have a wedding but that is just how things worked out with work and family schedules.  It was actually kind of nice.  The last few weddings that I was in or at were in the summer and it was so stinking hot!  I was in my friend’s wedding last June in New York State.  She had it outside in a state park.  Trust me, you don’t know misery until you’ve been standing outside for four hours in a bridesmaid’s dress in 90 degree heat.  Fun!

Anyway, the point of all of that was that my bridesmaids and I didn’t have to suffer through sweltering heat.  What I did have to suffer through was all of my bridesmaids complaining that they were going to look terrible in the wedding pictures because they weren’t going to be tan.  This got me to thinking about how I was going to look in my wedding dress if I was all pastySuntan Lotion and white.

As a gift to all of my bridesmaids, I decided to get them a tanning package at a local salon.  I gave them their gift about a month and a half before the wedding.  I wrapped up a bottle of this awesome suntan lotion that I found  and I put the tanning package certificate in the bag with the lotion.  They were all really excited about the tanning and the lotion that I got them is the best tanning lotion ever.  It smells great and helps you to get an even tan.  And it was totally worth it because we all look great in the wedding pictures!

Random Memories of San Diego

February 26th, 2009 by SMO

I went to San Diego last year for my boyfriend’s cousin’s wedding and we had a great time. We went out to Sea World, where we saw Shamu do all his amazing killer whale tricks, and we pet dolphins, and fed stingrays. We walked around all day long looking at all the awesome sea creatures that they had there. We had plans to go out to the beach that evening after we had seen all the fun marine life we could handle.

Walking to the beach we met a fellow named Matt who had not had such a fun, relaxing, or sightseeing day. He told us he had been looking all day for a place to find Bail Bonds in San Diego, and of course we had to ask him what Bail Bonds were exactly. He explained what they were and that he needed to find them for his friend to get his friend out of jail. We bought him a drink to try to calm him down, then when he left, we thought to ourselves how glad we were that we did not have to worry about having a day like that. We smiled at each other and held hands as we walked to the beach for the sunset.

Mediators Work to Resolve Differences

October 15th, 2008 by SMO

A mediator is a person that acts as a negotiator to help two parties resolve a dispute. Whether a dispute is in a professional capacity or personal, mediators can help you resolve your differences and find a workable solution that is best for all parties involved. Divorce Phoenix shows you how you can get a divorce using a mediator rather than an attorney. Once an attorney becomes involved, it is not only a matter of your interests at stake. There is now the matter of which attorney wins the case - and all attorneys want their cases to end in the win category.

Once you have added that extra facet, sometimes the interests of the two parties get lost in the battle. This can be very stressful, especially when children are involved. Arizona mediation provides out of court solutions for you to get your divorce settled with less stress and less expense. Unlike attorneys, mediators have different backgrounds. Mediators have backgrounds in law, psychology, and business, which enable them to help a divorcing couple resolve legal and financial issues as well as deal with emotional issues such as anger and sadness. You can find out more about divorce mediation at divorce mediation Ahwatukee.
